Juncos Recap WRLS 2019 IL

Monterey, Calif. – Juncos Racing rookie Rinus VeeKay dominated the final two rounds of the 2019 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Championship, taking home both poles and wins at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

After 18 Rounds over the past six months, the 2019 Indy Lights season concluded this weekend on the 2.238 mile, 11-Turn road course located at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. The first and only practice session kicked off the weekend Friday morning. Dalton Kellett (Toronto, Canada) driving the No. 67 K-Line Insulators USA/Juncos Racing car would only complete five laps after an issue with the engine would force him out of the session. The crew went hard to work replacing the engine to have Kellett back on track that afternoon for the first qualifying session.

Friday concluded with qualifying for Round 17. Rinus VeeKay (Hooffdorp, Netherlands) driving the No. 21 Mazda/Jumbo/Juncos Racing car dominated the session and would take the pole for the first race of the weekend. Kellett had one of his best qualifying attempts, posting the second fastest lap overall, but would have to settle for fifth after going off track and causing a red flag during the final minute and would be penalized by losing his fastest lap time overall.

The field returned to the track Saturday morning for the final qualifying session of the 2019 season. VeeKay once again claimed the pole, earning his fourth pole in a row and seventh for the season. Kellett qualified sixth.

Later that day the field was set for Round 17 with VeeKay starting from the pole and Kellett starting from the fifth position. VeeKay would continue his domination throughout the entire 30-lap race, leading every lap, recording the fastest lap overall, and finishing almost 10 seconds ahead of the second-place car. Kellett finished sixth.

The final round of the 2019 Indy Lights Championship concluded the weekend Sunday morning. VeeKay would once again start from the pole while teammate Kellett took the sixth starting position. Once the green flag waived for Round 18 VeeKay continued his dominance posting the fastest lap and leading every lap to secure his victorious sweep of the weekend. Kellett finished sixth.

VeeKay ends his rookie Indy Lights season second in the championship, recording five wins, seven poles, and 14 podiums.

“To end the Indy Lights season with a clean sweep of the weekend feels amazing,” said VeeKay. “We have all worked very hard in our fight for the championship and I am so proud of what all we were able to accomplish throughout the season. Everyone always stayed focused even when we had tough weekends on the road. I would like to thank everyone at Juncos Racing for all of their hard work throughout the year. I would also like to thank Ricardo Juncos, Mazda, Cooper Tires, Road to Indy, and my partners at Jumbo, La Place, KNAF for their support and giving me this opportunity.”

Kellett finished off the year recording one podium and three Top-5’s.

“It’s a bittersweet end to the 2019 Indy Lights season,” said Kellett. “It was an up and down year, we had some great highs and hit some rough patches. It was great racing here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. It’s a great track and I am so happy Road To Indy and the NTT IndyCar Series are back here racing. I am not 100% certain what the plans are for the 2020 season, but we are actively working on some things. So hopefully we have some news on that front soon to share. Once again thank you to Ricardo (Juncos), my engineers and crew and everyone else at Juncos Racing. They are very dedicated and worked very hard all year to make sure we were successful in the No. 67 K-Line Insulators USA. I can’t thank everyone at Andersen Promotions, Dan Andersen, Cooper Tires and the Road To Indy staff for their support throughout my Road To Indy career.”
